Itinerary
Day 1 Client's arrival in Punta Arenas. Taxi from airport to Hotel Terra Sur, Lib. Bernardo O'Higgins # 723, Punta Arenas, Chile. Meet leader in hotel lobby at 7.30p.m.to be escorted to restaurant for dinner.
Day 2 Morning collection from hotel to start the day's drive towards the penguin colony to see and photograph the cute burrowing Magellanic penguins. Continue in comfortable transfer vehicle across the Patagonian Steppe where you will have your first opportunity to see some of the unusual plant and animal life that exists in this area. After a lunch stop in Puerto Natales and detailed briefing we will continue on to our first paddle down a short section of the Rio de Las Chinas. This is an easy introductory paddle to get everyone comfortable with the gear and some water time on this first day. After paddling we go to our first campsite situated close to a working estancia on the edges of the beautiful Lago Toro. Chance to stroll down to the lakeside and enjoy the variety of bird life and spectacular views whilst dinner is prepared. No showers. Drive approx. 5 hours including penguins. B,D (lunch not included).
Day 3 After breakfast we begin our first days paddle. We will cross the remote Laguna Maravilla paddling alongside ancient southern beech forests towards the Sierra del Toro. We will take our time today and stop for help with paddling technique and safety making sure everyone feels comfortable After a few hours of paddling we will stop for a visit to some waterfalls and put our boats into Lago Porteno. Lunch will be taken on the shores here before continuing to our campsite in a sheltered spot on this lake. No showers. B,L,D.
Day 4 Today after breakfast and packing up camp we will continue towards the towering peaks of the Patagonian Andes crossing Lago Portenho and entering Lago Toro. Another full day of paddling awaits as we make our way into Torres del Paine National park. We will make a visit to the Park HQ and the Visitors Center where we will see park maps, history and a small museum and then continue a short distance to our campsite on the peaceful Serrano River. Our lovely location for the night this campsite is set away from the mountains giving a full view of the entire Paine Massif across the river. Great opportunities for fishing or sunset walks. Dinner in the cozy cabin with fabulous views of the Paine Horns. Hot showers available. For the early risers amongst us, this area offers some of the most spectacular sunrises in Patagonia! B,L,D
Day 5 Today is a chance for a rest from paddling and for those interested we can challenge the famous Towers hike up to the base of the granite towers that give the park its name. An "honest" walk this is a full day hike and one of the world's classic one day hikes. For those wanting more paddling we will take our boats over to Salto Chico and enjoy a peaceful half day paddle down the Paine River ending up at the vistor center. Camping tonight is back at our site on the Serrano River. B,L,D. Hot showers available.
Day 6 Rested and recharged a full day of paddling awaits us as we put our boats in at Lago Grey for a morning paddle amongst the icebergs here. A fantastic experience awaits us with opportunities for great photographs. After spending time amongst the icebergs we will paddle to the bottom of the lake and head down the Grey River passing the peaceful Margarita canyon and enjoying incredible views of Paine Grande and the French Valley off our port side. Lunch will be another remote riverside location and we will continue in the afternoon to the end of the river entering the blue waters of the Serrano River and making camp alongside the waterfalls on the river. Another beautiful and peaceful stop for the night as we pull our boats up the beach and chill the wine in the river! B,L,D. No showers.
Day 7 Today's paddling is possibly the longest of the tour as we make our way down the Serrano River a few miles and enter the Tyndall River. We will paddle our boats upriver here to enter Tyndall Lake and stop for lunch in a sheltered forest on the lake. This will also be our camp for the night so we can take a long break setting up camp with a hot drink before setting off across the lake and up to the face of Tyndall Glacier. Our goal is to get up close to this massive glacier and take in the awe inspiring scenery of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. This remote spot is supremely beautiful and visitors are extremely rare here so we can enjoy the spectacle all to ourselves. With luck we will pull our boats up on the shore and hike up and onto the glacier itself. Another of the many tour highlights! We will collect some very old pieces of ice and then head back down the river to our campsite for the night and enjoy a classic whiskey on ice!! B,L,D. No showers.
Day 8 Returning to the river and our kayaks for the last leg of our journey, we will paddle down to the very end of the Serrano River where it flows into Last Hope Sound. Time and weather allowing, we will have an opportunity to take our kayaks into the melt water lake fed by the Serrano Glacier, spending time paddling amongst the floating icebergs in a truly fantastic setting not soon forgotten. A perfect ending to this wild Patagonian adventure! After lunch we will be boarding a modern catamaran for a comfy ride back across Last Hope Sound to the quayside at Puerto Natales. A cozy hotel overlooking the sea awaits and a celebration dinner and warm bed!! Night in hotel. B,L,D. Hot showers.
Day 9 Today we can enjoy a leisurely morning in this quaint town to shop for souvenirs, postcards etc before continuing on to Punta Arenas airport for onward flights or onward travel (depending on flight times). B
