Guide itinerary
Day 1 Today, we will meet our guide at the
Serrano River base camp for an early start. After a lecture on safety
and technique we will load our luggage and associated equipment onto
our kayaks. Then we will board our two-man sea kayaks and start our
downriver float into this virgin wilderness. Cameras will need to be
kept handy as we enjoy beautiful views of the distant snow capped mountains
and the variety of bird life that inhabits these shores. The towering
Paine massif will accompany us for the greater part of the morning.
In the afternoon we will paddle 'up stream' to enter Tyndall river heading
towards its headwaters at Tyndall lake. Our goal is a beautiful campsite
on the lake in a wild setting. Night camping in pristine wilderness
(or under the stars if you prefer).
Day 2 After a wholesome breakfast, we will
once again board our sea kayaks and head up towards the glacier itself.
This is a short but fairly strenuous leg that gets us into what we feel
to be one of the most stunning sites/experiences in all of Patagonia.
An up close view of a towering valley glacier that reaches 60 feet high
in some spots. This remote spot is supremely beautiful and visitors
are extremely rare enabling us to enjoy the spectacle all by ourselves.
We will get a chance to hike up to the glacier if the weather is cooperating
and enjoy a whisky with some thousand year old Patagonian ice. Afterwards
we will head back downriver and paddle to the Serrano rivermouth where
it enters Last Hope Sound. After a long day of paddling, we will enjoy
the comforts of a hot shower, fireside meal and comfy beds in the Hotel
Monte Balmaceda set in a remote spot just under the Serrano Glacier
and beautiful Balmaceda Mountain.
Day 3 After this morning's breakfast, we enter
the sea for our short saltwater crossing of the Sound before entering
Rio Azul. Paddling upriver we enter a pristine region filled with old
growth forests, streams and waterfalls ending up finally in the spectacular
Lago Azul. Set just under the mountains that mark the end of the Patagonian
Ice cap this very remote and lonely spot is remarkable in its isolated
beauty. We make camp at the far end of the valley on the shores of Lago
Azul.
Day 4 After breakfast we hop in our kayaks
for a peaceful paddle to the Bellavista River. Here we leave our kayaks
behind and start our overland adventure hiking towards Balmaceda Glacier.
This is the southernmost glacier in the area that spills down from the
Patagonian Ice cap and we make camp just in the shadows of the glacier.
Tonight we will dine and sleep with the sounds of calving icebergs echoing
across the valley.
Day 5 A full day hike in this remote valley
takes us along the base of Balmaceda Glacier and around the back of
the mountain with the same name. Our destination is a reunion with the
Serrano River where we paddled a few days before. We will make camp
at an estancia situated on the river and maintaining its old ways in
this very remote location. A visit to a very special character who has
lived in this area for many years complements the day's adventure followed
by a riverside lamb asado at our final campsite.
Day 6 After our final camp breakfast, we will
whizz downriver in zodiacs to reunite with our kayaks. The setting for
lunch will be alongside a lake containing countless icebergs fed by
the Serrano Glacier. After lunch we will have an opportunity to take
our kayaks into the melt water lake fed by the glacier spending the
afternoon amongst floating icebergs in a very special setting not soon
forgotten (weather dependent). Late afternoon we will be boarding a
modern catamaran for a comfy ride back across Last Hope Sound to the
quayside at Puerto Natales. On arrival in this interesting waterside
town, clients can continue on to their hotel or onward transfer.
