Winter in Torres del Paine and Patagonia
Find out how to beat the crowds
In winter, Torres del Paine receives about a tenth of the visitors it gets in summer. BlueGreen Adventures has been running winter trips in the park for decades. We know how to tap into the season’s unique highlights, such as near-empty trails, gentle winds, low-slung sunlight perfect for photography and wildlife that’s more likely to be out in the snowy open. Our local knowledge and year-round presence enables us to navigate winter trail closures, hotel availability, reduced sailing schedules and winter rules. For example, all trekking must be guided in winter.
Average highs range 2°C to 6°C (36-43°F) with lows at around -3°C (27°F). Snowfall is common on higher ground, but roads are usually cleared.
Here’s a roundup of what can be done in winter.
Photography and Wildlife
Take it slow with a guided expedition through snow-dusted peaks to photograph wildlife such as guanacos, rheas, foxes and condors backlit by soft winter light. Winter in Torres del Paine is also one of the best times to try to track the elusive puma, aided by fewer visitors, thinning vegetation and snow in the foothills.
Snow Shoes Hiking
Strap on snowshoes (raquetas) and head off-trail into quieter parts of the park that can be tough to access otherwise. Explore silent, snow-covered landscapes with panoramic views and connect deeply with nature.
Grey Boat to Grey Glacier
A dramatic water journey across Lago Grey to the towering Grey Glacier. Think soft winter skies, glowing icebergs and close-up glacier views.
Kayaking
Guided kayaking in Torres del Paine’s wild waterways is possible even in winter. Conditions and launch locations depend on weather, but with proper cold-weather gear and expert guides you can paddle among snow-lined lakes and channels, immersed in dramatic mountain scenery.
Hiking
With an experienced guide you can trek winter trails safely. Options range from moderate walks rich with wildlife and winter views to more challenging routes, including guided versions of classic hikes like the approach to the base of the Towers. Local logistics support from Puerto Natales means less planning stress for you.
Winter Trips
Bluegreen’s winter adventures include shoe-shoes hiking, wildlife tracking, glacier-view luxury, icy kayaking, and snow-lit full-moon adventures.
